CT stands for Computed Tomography and it is also known as "CAT scanning" (Computed Axial Tomography). CT is fast, patient friendly and has the unique ability to image a combination of soft tissue, bone, and blood vessels. A CT scan allows the radiologist to see the location, nature, and extent of many different diseases or abnormalities inside your body. With significantly shorter scan time, the Toshiba Aquilion gives greater patient comfort
since breath holds are shorter and the time spent on the table is greatly reduced.
Speed, however, is not the only advancement enjoyed by the Aquilion. The new scanner can take slices that are 0.5 mm
thick, providing resolution that is equal to any CT scanner available today. These very thin slices can be transferred to
powerful computers to view anatomy, providing physicians with enhanced diagnostic tools to help
better diagnose blood clots, infections, diseases (including cancer), and injuries received as a result of trauma.
Thanks to major advancements in detector technology, these thin slices are taken with as little radiation as possible. To
further reduce radiation usage, the Aquilion is able to continuously change the X-ray output during a scan. These two
factors combine to provide a detailed scan at a lower dose than previously possible. This is especially important to
children and those receiving frequent followup scans.
